Room 4

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Hello, my name is Lorna Hopkins and I teach in Room Four.  We are a Year five and six class and are part of the Kauri Syndicate at Sunnyvale Primary.  I have been teaching at Sunnyvale for a number of years and have taught brothers and sisters of many of our families.  Often students drop in and let me know what they are up to.  I enjoy meeting them again and finding out what they are doing.

SWIMMING / FITNESS

We have swimming four times a week.  Our days are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  All children are expected to swim unless there is a note from home.  Please ensure togs and towels are named and in a bag.  It is sensible, especially in this hot weather, to bring togs every day as there are free swims at lunchtime taken by Mrs Munro.  We often have Kauri Fitness and all children are expected to participate unless they have a note.  As the year progresses there will be team sports that children try out for.  We encourage all children to participate in sports, as they learn sound teamwork skills.

HOMEWORK

In Room Four homework goes home on Mondays and sometimes Fridays for the following week.  It is due back on the Friday of the week it is given out.  Homework is an ABC study one week and a homework sheet the following week.  Each week children will get spelling words and basic facts to learn. Short homework notes will be included in the back of each book for parents to read and sign.  The homework notes are to give you an idea of what is happening at school.  If a child has a problem with the homework and you feel that they have tried their best, please sign the homework and let me know where the problem was.  If you are worried, please write a note letting me know the problem.

WATER / HATS / POSITIVE AWARDS

Children are encouraged to have a bottle of water on their desks.  Juice can be kept in their school bags.  Hats (in line with school policy) are expected to be worn outside.  Room Four has a star chart system for positive behaviour, good role model behaviour and quality work.  Once a child gets 10 stickers they receive a treasure from the treasure box.  This can be anything from a key ring, erasers, to coloured pencils.  If your child tells you they have earned stars or a treasure, please praise them as they will have earned it.

CAMP

Camp this year is in Term Three.  We will be fundraising for camp during Terms one and two.  Camp is an excellent challenge for the children as they learn to take risks and try new experiences.  We always have wonderful parents who go the extra mile to help children enjoy and try new things.  I would encourage all parents to become involved in camp.  You will come home exhausted but have thoroughly enjoyed yourself.

UNIFORM

As we have a uniform, all children are expected to wear it.  Please remember to label the uniform with a vivid.  They are identical and it is harder to return them to the correct owner if they are not named.  It is also wise to rename them after the vivid begins to wear off.

I expect all children to put 100% effort into all their work and do the very best they can.  This is part of learning for life and not giving up.  I will support all children, at all levels, in their learning.  You can only learn by giving it a go!

Please remember, any worries or problems come and see me.

Thank you, Lorna Hopkins
