Room 5

Welcome

Kia ora Parents/Caregivers and welcome to Room Five. My name is Tim Taura and I am looking forward to working with you and your children this year. This is my sixth year in teaching, and my second year as the senior teacher of the Kauri Syndicate.  We have made a wonderful start to the year, and have many exciting activities to look forward to. This newsletter is to let you know a few things that will be going on this term in our class, as well as inform you of some of the systems and routines that we will follow in Room Five to support our learning. For any other inquiries please feel free to see me in the classroom before or after school.

Things to Remember:

School starts at 8.55 am. Your child is allowed in the classroom from 8.15 am. It is important that they arrive at school in time to put away their bags, catch up with their friends and have a chance to settle in so they are ready for the day ahead.

Uniform: The children are required to have the correct uniform on each day. This term sunhats are compulsory. No Hat means No Play. Please label all parts of your child’s uniform clearly.

Swimming: Our swimming days are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Please ensure that your child has their togs and their towel on these days.

What we are learning about:

Reading comprehension strategy: inference  We have been learning that inferring is being able to ‘read between the lines’, when the author implies something but doesn’t exactly state it. We have learnt that we need to use the clues in the text and our own prior knowledge to help us understand what we are reading about.

Writing:  We have been learning that good writers work through a writing process before completing a piece of published work. We have been learning different ways of planning, conferencing, revising, editing and publishing our writing.

Maths (Numeracy):  We have spent time reinforcing our existing addition and subtraction strategies. We have also been introduced to more efficient addition and subtraction strategies when working with multi digit problems.

Strand maths (Statistics):  We have been learning how to complete a statistical investigation. We have been learning how to gather, display and analyse statistical information.

P.E (Swimming):  We have been learning the correct swimming techniques for both freestyle and backstroke.

De Bono’s Thinking Hats:  We have been learning to use De Bono’s Thinking hats to help us think in different ways and to help us focus our thinking.
