Room 10
Welcome to Room 10
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome to Room 10. It is a pleasure to have your child begin their Sunnyvale School learning journey in our classroom this year. I hope your child is feeling settled and happy.
This year Room 10 has Miss Gauntlett as their teacher. Room 10 is part of the Kowhai syndicate. The other classes in our syndicate are Room 7, 8, 9, 12, 15 and 16. Later in the year we will be joined by Room 11. Room 10 is a reception class. This means that your child may move to one of the other classes in the Kowhai Syndicate during the year. If this is the case you will be contacted by Mrs Munro and the school office.
The main focus of learning in the Junior School is English and Maths. So, most of our learning involves different aspects of these two curriculum areas. We do still spend time on the other curriculum areas but to a lesser degree.
During the first few weeks of school your child will be tested on their language, reading, writing and maths skills. This is to show us what your child already knows and where to begin teaching them. After your child has been tested I will invite you to meet with me so that we can go through their test, discuss their first learning goals and how you can help at home.
Your child will have homework every night. This could be one or more of the following: Alphabet Book, Poem Book, Reader, Library Book, Word Card or Alphabet Card. It is important to make their homework time enjoyable. It is a time when they can show you how good they are getting. We suggest you only need to spend 10 – 15 minutes each night on their homework. Your child may bring the same book home on occasions and occasionally if they really love a book you may see it often. Please leave Alphabet/Word Cards in their book bag so that they can be used at both home and school. Also send all homework back to school the following day in their Book Bag even if you did not have time to complete it.
If for any reason your child is feeling unhappy or you are uncertain about something just come and talk to me about it. I am available in the mornings and most afternoons.
I hope your child has a good time in Room 10.
