Room 16
Dear Parents/Caregivers
Welcome to Room 16. I hope you had a wonderful holiday. I look forward to working with you and your child. If you wish to discuss matters concerning your child, please come and see me and we will arrange a time. Staff meetings are held on Mondays and Wednesdays straight after school so I am unavailable at those times.
A few of the routines in Room 16 are:
· When arriving at school children will be required to bring their book bag into the classroom and put them into the appropriate box. Children are encouraged to become responsible for their own belongings.
· Hats will be kept in their bags and need to be worn during morning tea and lunchtime and during other activities outside in Terms 1 and 4. This is an expectation for all Sunnyvale students.
· Reading books will come home from Monday to Thursday. These books have been read at school in an instructional setting with the teacher. Enjoy reading these books with your child and make it a fun and special time. Children will be put in reading groups in week two, and these groups/levels will change as children are re-tested. It is worth remembering that reading is for enjoyment, for gaining knowledge and is an important precursor to successful writing skills. Sometimes children will bring home books from their choosing box that they have chosen.
· Poem books will come home on Fridays with our weekly poem instead of a reading book. These should be read at home like a normal reading book. Poem books need to be returned on Monday.
· Later in the year spelling notebooks will come home. Students will have five words to learn and will be tested the following week. These are essential high frequency words for writing and reading. Please sign these books.
· Children are encouraged to bring a bottle containing water into the classroom. These will be kept at the sink area. A break for ‘brain food’ will happen before lunch. Brain food needs to be ‘ready to eat’ bite sized food, consisting of healthy ‘brain food,’ for example - raw fruit, vegetables, unsalted nuts, raisins or plain popcorn.
· We have news sharing from Tuesday to Friday in Room 16. The children can bring an item of interest to school. This may be a photo, nature item, picture, painting, computer activity etc that they would like to talk about. Oral communication is an important part of our learning.
· It is preferable that precious possessions, like toys, be kept safely at home.
· Parents are asked to remain outside, or under the covered walk way, until the dismissal bell has gone at 3pm. This is to ensure that children follow the end of day routines without distraction.
· Please make sure that all items of clothing are named, including shoes. Children are required to leave school with their shoes on.
At the beginning of this term we will be focusing on rules, relationships and routines. Special emphasis will also be placed on questions like: What is a good learner and how do we choose our attitude.
I look forward to teaching and learning with your child. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to email, phone or come in and see me.
Thank you,
Miss Janai Calvert
